Overview

The College of Mechanical Engineering (ME) of Donghua University, formerly the Department of Textile Machinery Manufacturing of East China Textile Institute, was founded in 1951. The Department of Textile Machinery Manufacturing originated from the Department of Machinery in Shanghai Institute of Textile Engineering and the Division of Textile Machinery in Jiao Tong University, which is one of the three earliest established departments in Donghua University, and its characteristic discipline was Textile Machinery Design and Manufacture. In 1981, as one of the first batch of universities in China, the college was awarded the right by the State Academic Degree Committee to confer doctorate, master and bachelor degrees in Textile Machinery. In 1999 it was renamed as the College of Mechanical Engineering. In 2007, Mechanical Design and Theory was selected as a national key discipline. In 2010 and 2020, the college was authorized the right to confer doctoral degree in first-level discipline (Mechanical Engineering) and professional doctoral degree in mechanical engineering, respectively. In 2012, Mechanical Engineering was selected as a first-class discipline in Shanghai. The college now has three undergraduate majors in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, and Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering. Especially, Mechanical Engineering was selected as a national first-class undergraduate major in 2019.

The college has more than 140 faculties, among them there are 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 98 full-time teachers, 73 associate professors or professors. 82% of faculties have Master or PhD degree. The college currently enrolls 1200 undergraduates and 600 graduates.

The college has undertaken a large number of research projects and grants supported by National Key Research and Development Program of China, National Science and Technology Major Project, National Science and Technology Supporting Program, National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Science and Technology Innovation Fund, National Key New Product Plan, National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), National High Technology Research and Development Program (863 Program), Key Project of Chinese Ministry of Education, and a series of provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological projects.

At present, the college focuses on the development of six research areas, including high-end and special textile equipment and systems, intelligent detection and control of electromechanical systems, advanced molding technology and high-performance manufacturing, intelligent textile manufacturing and robots, micro-nano electromechanical systems and manufacturing, and industrial product design and systems.

Over the past 70 years, the college has educated tens of thousands of talents, among whom many have become academician of the Engineering Academy, outstanding scientists, educationists, statesmen, famous enterprisers and experts. With its distinguished textile mechanical discipline, the college has made outstanding contribution to the development and progress of textile machinery industry.
