Overview
College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CCEB) at Donghua University was established in October 2007 from the mergence of the former College of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering and the Institute of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology. The root of the former College of Chemistry&Chemical Engineering stemmed back to one of the three founding departments of the university (established in 1951), namely, the Department of Textile Chemical Engineering. The discipline of Textile Chemistry and Dyeing & Finishing Engineering is a recognized as National Key Discipline, which is renowned at home and abroad. The former Institute of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, established in October 2004, has drawn on experience from oversea institutions in both organization and management.
After 70 years of development, CCEB currently consists of four departments: Textile Chemical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Biological Engineering, and Chemistry. It also harbors five important research bases: the National Engineering Research Center for Dyeing & Finishing of Textile, the National Manufacturing Innovation Center of Advanced Dyeing & Finishing Technology, the Key Lab of Eco-Textile of the Ministry of Education, Key Lab of Textile Science & Technology (Branch of Dyeing & Finishing) of the Ministry of Education, and Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Nano-Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine.
The college has 135 faculty and staff members, among which there are 47 full professors and 45 associate professors. About 78% of our faculty members hold doctoral degrees and more than 76% of them have oversea studying or working experiences.
As the characteristic discipline of CCEB, Textile Chemistry and Dyeing & Finishing Engineering is listed as a Key Discipline at both the national and municipal level. It is also one of the Key Disciplines supported by the 211 Project of the Ministry of Education. CCEB’s new star discipline, Chemistry, is recognized as one of the world top 1% chemistry programs by the ESI ranking lists of disciplinary areas.
With a solid strength in student cultivation, CCEB provides three undergraduate programs (including Sino-German cooperation), eight master programs (including five academic master programs and three engineering master programs), and three doctoral programs.
CCEB has also set up a number of training bases for the undergraduate and graduate students with leading enterprises in the textile industry in the nearby provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. A number of enterprises have set up scholarship programs with CCEB in awarding students for academic excellence. In addition to teaching, our faculty members actively participate in research projects funded by the government and corporations, resulting in fruitful achievement.
CCEB has established extensive scientific research cooperation and academic communication with universities and institutions in many developed countries including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Portugal, Sweden, and Singapore. As early as 2003, CCEB started a collaboration with Reutlingen University of Applied Sciences, Germany to offer a dual-diploma program in Textile Chemical Engineering. CCEB also provides students with opportunities to participate in exchange programs with Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Germany and University of California-Davis, USA.

The research areas of Biomaterials Science focus on biomaterials and tissue engineering, diagnostic materials and technology, materials and technology for drug delivery, biomedical optics and photonics, biofabrication, etc. The Biomaterials Science discipline takes advantages of chemistry, materials and textile disciplines of Donghua University to carry out independent research and development and realize the industrialization of scientific research achievements. The main task of Biomaterials Science doctoral program is to cultivate senior interdisciplinary talents with the knowledge of material science, life science and clinical medicine, with strong experimental and design ability, and engaged in the research and development of biomaterials and products.
Master Degree Programs:
Textile Chemistry and Dyeing & Finishing Engineering
Textile Chemistry and Dyeing & Finishing Engineering has granted the right to confer the master’s degree in the year of 1981, rated as A+ discipline in the fourth-round discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, entered key construction discipline list of “211 Project” by the Ministry of Education, Shanghai Municipal Key Discipline list, national Double First-Class Construction Discipline list and Shanghai first-class discipline (type A) list.
Chemistry
The discipline of chemistry at Donghua University has always been an important supporting fundamental discipline since 1951, when the University was founded. Since the year of 2010, the chemistry discipline at Donghua University has repeatedly been listed as the top 1% chemistry programs worldwide based on Thomson Reuters’ Essential Science Indicators (ESI). Chemistry aims at training professionals for the chemical, textile, materials and related industries with solid fundamental knowledge in chemistry and, at the same time, with practical skills in solving actual problems. The development of professional skills and attainment has been incorporated into our curriculum.
Chemical Engineering and Technology
The Chemical Engineering and Technology Program at Donghua University was established in 1978. It is a first-level discipline which concentrates on practical research including Applied Chemistry, Chemical Process and Materials Chemical Engineering. It has bred a number of research fields with influential industry in functional materials, nanotechnology, electronic chemicals, biotechnology and others. The research fields of this program involve the synthesis of fine chemicals, research of green and clean synthetic processes of organic compounds, exploitation of textile materials chemical engineering process, and conductive polymer materials.
Biochemical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering (BME) discipline at Donghua University was established in 2007, and awarded key development discipline of Donghua University in 2013. Thanks to the continued effort to ensure rapid development over the years, BME obtained national-level master degree authorization in 2011. Presently, BME faculty consists of 36 full-time teaching and research staffs (including 15 professors and 16 associate professors). All the faculty members have doctorate degrees, 32 members have more than one year of overseas study experience, 16 members were selected for various national and Shanghai talent programs. BME has formed its own characteristics in four research areas, including biomaterials, tissue engineering, nanomedicine, and clinical molecular diagnosis.
