Donghua University is one of the first domestic universities to establish environmental disciplines and civil engineering disciplines in line with the National "211 Project" and "Double First-Class University " construction  under the Ministry of Education. The college established the major of environmental engineering in 1976, the major of heating ventilation and air-conditioning engineering in 1982; the Department of Environmental Engineering in 1993, and the College of Environmental Science and Engineering in 1999. The college consists of three departments: Department of Environmental Science, the Department of Environmental Engineering, and the Department of Civil and Energy Engineering.  It also boasts the "State Environmental Protection Engineering Centre for Pollution Treatment and Control in Textile Industry," affiliated to Ministry of Ecology and Environment, "Key Laboratory of Textile Industry Pollution Control and Emission Reduction "under China National Textile and Apparel Council,and the public service platform for the central laboratory . The college is the governing unit of the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences, the vice chairman unit of the China Printing and Dyeing Association, and the vice chairman unit of the HVAC Branch of the Architectural Society of China.

The college has two first-level disciplines, "Environmental Science and Engineering" and "Civil Engineering". The sub-discipline "Environmental Engineering" was listed as a key discipline in Shanghai in 2007, and "Environmental Science and Engineering" was selected as a first-class discipline in Shanghai universities in 2012, and as a IV top-level discipline of Shanghai Environment and Ecology in 2016 . In terms of undergraduate training, the college has four majors: Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Built Environment and Energy Application engineering, and Energy and Environmental System Engineering. Among them, the undergraduate majors of "Environmental Engineering" and "Energy and Environmental System Engineering" were included in the national-level specialty construction list, and the "Environmental Engineering", listed as the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Programhas passed the CEEAA engineering education certification four times. In 2019, Environmental Engineering and Built Environment and Energy Application Engineering were included in the national and Shanghai "First-Class Undergraduate Majors" construction plans.

The college has two first-level Doctorate (and Master's degree) authorization disciplines ("Environmental Science and Engineering", "Civil Engineering"), as well as three Master's Degree authorization qualifications (Energy and Power, Civil Engineering and Water Conservancy, and Resources and Environment). It also has a post-doctoral  research station for the first-level discipline of "Environmental Science and Engineering".

The college currently has more than 100 faculty members, including 2 dual-employed academicians30 with senior titles36 with deputy senior titles and 26 with intermediate titles. Teachers with doctoral degrees account for more than 80% of the total, of which more than 60% have overseas study and research backgrounds.

The two first-level discipline doctoral programs of the college enroll more than 20 doctoral students, nearly 200 postgraduates (including professional degrees), about 180 undergraduates, and more than 40 international students every year. In the past five years, the college has published 14 undergraduate or graduate textbooks, 4 national planning textbooks, and won more than 10 provincial and ministerial teaching achievement awards. In recent years, the college has won the awards of 1 national quality course, 7 Shanghai quality courses, and 6 Shanghai key construction courses have been awarded.

The college is unique among similar disciplines in "211" colleges and universities. With   distinctive advantages in the fields of pollution control and resource utilization in the textile industry, ventilation and energy conservation in industrial and civil buildings  it has developed vast array of  achievements and new technologies  that own independent intellectual property rights,  exerting  profound impact in the industry. Among them,  many research results have been applied in environmental projects in the  coastal areas where China's textile industry is concentrated. In addition, a range of significant results  have also been produced  in environmental biology, environmental monitoring, air pollution control, environmental materials, solid waste recycling, water resources protection and ecological restoration, sewage treatment and recycling, municipal engineering materials, air environment and building energy conservation, industrial ventilation and gas purification, sustainable energy and its application, meteorological disasters and early warning in coastal cities, disaster mechanics of coastal structures, fire protection and high temperature resistant material technology.

In the past five years, the college undertook more than 600 projects with a total funding of nearly 100 million yuan. Among them, there are the distinction of 90 strong national, provincial and ministerial projects, 10-odd national and provincial  awards for scientific research, 400-odd patents  in application and over 180 authorized ones. Among the  1,900-strong research papers published in a wide variety of journals 700-odd articles are registered in SCI/EI, 50-odd in CPCI, There are also , 10 monographs. More than 60 research results with of independent intellectual property rights have been applied to large-scale pollution prevention and control projects, providing technical services and consultation to 240-odd industrial enterprises. In addition, through cooperation in research projects, joint training of graduate students, academic visits and lectures, the college has  created cooperation and exchange programs with many higher education institutions and scientific research institutions , including both the domestic ones and those in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Hong Kong. As a member of the Alliance of the Belt and Road for Environmental Deans (ABRED),.the college is actively engaged in bilateral dialogues, communication and cooperation in the field of ecological and environmental protection cooperation with members of the “the  Belt and  Road” national alliance, strengthens ecological and environmental information support services, and promotes environmental standards, technology and industrial cooperation, with positive progress and remarkable results.

History & Development

The College of Environmental Science and Engineering of Donghua University (formerly China Textile University) was founded in 1999, with Departments of Environmental Engineering, Department of Environmental Science, Department of Civil and Energy Engineering, and Experimental Center.

The environment and civil engineering disciplines originated from dyeing &weaving and textile disciplines set at the founding of the college in the early 1950s, and developed from the early majors of "Environmental Engineering" and "HVAC".

In 1975, in response to the environmental pollution induced by the country’s textile wastewater, the Textile Chemical Engineering Department set up  the "Three Wastes" Teaching and Research Office ,with Professor Fang Borong as the first director In 1976 the "Three Wastes" Research Office  was renamed the Environmental Engineering Teaching and Research Office , and the major of Environmental Engineering was established. In 1979, Environmental Engineering major granted the right to confer Bachelor's degree one of  the first batch of  higher education institutions in China to establish environmental disciplines.

In 1982, the Thermal Engineering Teaching and Research Office of the Department of Mechanical Engineering established the major of "HVAC" and began recruitment. In 1984, the "HVAC" major began to recruit post-graduate students, and in 1986, was granted the right to confer a Master's degrees.

In 1993, the "Environmental Engineering Department" was established by combining the Environmental Engineering Teaching and Research Office of the Textile Chemical Engineering Department, the Chemical Engineering Foundation Teaching and Research Office, and the HVAC Teaching and Research Office of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the former China Textile University. In 1996, the department was granted the right to confer a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering.

After 25 years of disciplinary development, the College of Environmental Science and Engineering was established in July 1999.

In 2000, the college was granted the right to confer Doctoral degree in the sub discipline of Environmental Engineering.

In 2001, the college established the Department of Environmental Science.

In 2003, the college was granted the right to confer the Master’s degrees in Environmental Science and Thermal Energy Engineering.

In 2005, the college was granted the right to confer Doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering.

In 2006, the college was granted the right to confer the doctoral degree in Heating, Gas supply, Ventilation and Air conditioning Engineering.

In 2007, the college established  a post-doctoral research  station for Environmental Science and Engineering. In the same year, the sub-discipline “Environmental Engineering” was listed as a key discipline in Shanghai.

In 2008, the college set up the Energy and Environmental sSystem Engineering profession.

In 2011, the college gained approval to establish the “National Environmental Protection Textile Industry Pollution Control Engineering Technology Center” affiliated to the Ministry of Ecological Resources.

In 2018, the college was granted the right to confer the Doctoral degrees in the first -level discipline of Civil Engineering.

In 2019, The three Master's Degree programs of Environmental Engineering, Power Engineering, Architecture and Civil Engineering were adjusted to the Resources and Environment, Energy and Power, and Civil Engineering.
