Overview

The College of Humanities was founded in 1999, originating from the teaching unit of Politics of East China Textile Engineering Institute in 1951. In 2016, the Department of Ideological and Political Theory developed into School of Marxism. Currently, there are Department of Public Administration and Law, Department of Communication, Institute of Humanities Studies, and Institute of History Studies.The college hosts five undergraduate programs of Law, Administrative Management, Public Relations, Educational Technology(Media Production and Communication), and Communication; four first-tier master’s degree programssuch as History of Science and Technology, History of China, Public Administration, and Journalism and CommunicationTwo professional master’s degree programs: Master of Public Administration (MPA), Master of Journalism and Communication (MJC)One interdisciplinary PhD program in the history of textile science and technology.


By now, the college has 74 faculty members, including 13 professors and 26 associate professors; more than 1,300 students, including 974 undergraduates, 349 postgraduates, 13 doctoral candidates, and 6 international students.


Over the past five years, the college has achieved fruitful results in personnel training, and scientific research. Adhering to the talents training philosophy centered on student development, the college endeavors to explore unique training paths and promotes international talents cultivation practices, combining with temporary social development demands, and closely revolving around the positioning and goals of practical and application-oriented innovative talents training.


Till now, the college has established a joint training model with universities in the United Kingdom, the United States, Ialy, and the Netherlands. In addition, the college has won various prizes and projects, including two first prizes in the teaching competition for young teachers in Shanghai universities (He Chaoan, Yu Songxin), a new liberal arts research and reform practice projects issued by the Ministry of Education among the first batch, 66 government sponsored projects and 36 company sponsored projects. Among them, it includes 7 projects approved by the National Philosophy and Social Science Fund and its sub-projects, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 3 Humanities and Social Science Projects approved by the Ministry of Education, and 6 projects approved by Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Fund, and 2 second prizes in Social Science Outstanding Academic Paper. Moreover, it has published more than 80 CSSCI papers and 36 books.

Degree Program

Undergraduate Degrees

  • Law (Law)

The Law major was established in the 1990s. It is one of the earliest pure liberal arts majors in Donghua University, and also one of the earliest undergraduate law majors set up in the original non-law, especially engineering colleges and universities in Shanghai.


  • Administrative Management (Management)

The Administrative Management major was established in 1998. In 2005, the college was entitled to grant a master’s degree by Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council.


  • Public Relations (Management)

Th Public Relations major is the first batch of public relations majors in China and the first in Shanghai. In 2001, the college became member of China International Public Relations Association and Shanghai Public Relations Association. In 2010, it was rated as a five-star public relations undergraduate major. And in 2014, the college was awarded the standing director unit of China Public Relations Society.


  • Educational Technology (Media Production and Communication) (Pedagogy)

The Educational Technology major was approved in 2000, with an objective of cultivating professionals who are proficient in pedagogy, theory of psychology and communication, and accumulate solid computer multimedia and network technology. In addition, the college has made generous breakthroughs and results in online examination system. Students have won various awards in competitions such as Chinese College Student Computer Design Competition, and National Advertising Art Design Competition for College Students.


  • Communication (Literature)

The Communication major, characterized in "New Internet Media", was approved by the Ministry of Education in 2008. In 2014, the college started to enroll undergraduates in fashion communication. In 2015, the major ranked top 26% among national journalism and communication category.


Master Degrees

  • History of Science and Technology (Science)

As first-tier discipline, History of Science and Technology is one of the key disciplines of Donghua University. In 2005, it was entitled by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to grant Master's Degree.


  • History of China (History)

As first-tier discipline, History of China, was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in 2011, to grant Master's Degree.


  • Public Administration (Management)

It was entitled by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to grand the second-tier f in 2005, and the first-tier master's degree in 2017


  • Journalism & Communication (Literature)

As a first-tier discipline, it was entitled by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to grant master's degree in 2017. It is Shanghai Excellent News & Communication Talent Training Base.


  • Master of Public Administration (MPA) (Management)

This professional degree program wasauthorized by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in 2014.


  • Master of Journalism and Communication (MJC) (Literature)

This professional degree program was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in 2017.


Ph.D. Degrees

  • History of Textile Technology (Engineering)

It is a second-tier interdisciplinary doctoral degree program that was jointly established by the College of Humanities and the Coolege of Textiles in 2012. It started the first recruitment in 2014. This discipline has won the First Awards in Textile Science and Technology Progress, National Textile System Excellent Book, and National Cultural Museum Archaeology Top Ten Book, and more than 10 other provincial and ministerial scientific research awards.
