Frontier Research | DHU Scholar Publishes in Internationally Renowned Philosophy Journal Nous

Date:2025-04-18

Recently, Professor He Chao’an from the School of Humanities at DHU published his article titled “Farewell to Modal Theory of Luck” online in Nous, a leading international journal of philosophy.

The paper focuses on a foundational issue in contemporary analytic philosophy: how to give a coherent philosophical account of luck. The most influential current view is the modal theory of luck, which holds that an event is lucky if and only if it possesses modal fragility. He challenges this theory by introducing a Frankfurt lottery case to show that some lucky events may not exhibit modal fragility, thereby calling into question the modal theory’s adequacy. The core arguments and findings offer significant implications for ongoing research in epistemology, metaphysics, moral philosophy, and philosophy of law.

Founded in 1967, Nous is recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious philosophy journals, with broad academic influence and high international visibility. Publishing around fifty papers annually, it consistently ranks among the top philosophy journals worldwide. According to the latest statistics from Leiter Reports, Nous is currently ranked second globally.
