Two New Additions to Shakespeare Studies Series Published

Recently, Studies on Shakespeare’s Histories and Romances Conducted by Chinese Academics and Studies on Shakespeare’s Poetry and Translation Conducted by Chinese Academics, compiled under the auspices of the Shakespeare Institute at DHU, have been published by The Commercial Press. These two volumes are the newest additions in the second series of the Shakespeare Studies Series.

Co-edited by Professor Yang Lingui (Vice President of The Shakespeare Association of China [SAC] and Executive Committee Member of The International Shakespeare Association) and Professor Li Weimin (Vice President of SAC and Director of the Center for Shakespeare Studies at Sichuan International Studies University), Studies on Shakespeare’s Histories and Romances Conducted by Chinese Academics features a foreword by Professor Huang Bikang (President of SAC and scholar at Peking University). Professors Yang and Li each contributed extensive introductory essays analyzing the distinctive features of Shakespeare’s histories and romances, while surveying global research trends in these genres. The anthology compiles over twenty seminal essays representing the achievements of Chinese scholarship in these two distinctive categories of Shakespearean drama, offering unique Chinese perspectives.

The other book,Studies on Shakespeare’s Poetry and Translation Conducted by Chinese Academics, co-edited by Professor Yang Lingui and Professor Luo Yimin (Vice President of SAC and President of Chongqing Shakespeare Research Association), features a foreword by Mr. Su Fuzhong, senior editor at People’s Literature Publishing House and renowned translator. Professors Yang and Luo each contributed comprehensive introductory essays that survey China’s scholarly achievements in both Shakespearean poetry studies and the translation of Shakespeare’s works into Chinese. The anthology brings together more than thirty representative research papers published since 1940, showcasing China’s most significant contributions in these two specialized fields of Shakespeare studies.

The first series of the Shakespeare Studies Series, published in 2020 and comprising five volumes, has garnered enthusiastic responses from the global Shakespearean academic community. The international journal Multicultural Shakespeare featured a review noting that the series demonstrates distinctive Chinese perspectives in its theoretical and thematic approaches. The review particularly highlighted how Chinese scholars engage with international Shakespeare research while making significant contributions to global Shakespeare studies through scholarly exchange.

Beyond these, according to the arrangement, the second series will publish Selected World Shakespeare Studies (Volume II) and Materialist Examinations of Shakespeare and Modern Culture as its next volumes.
