Prof. Liu Yanbiao’s team from the DHU Institute of Science and Technology and Prof. You Shijie’s team from Harbin Institute of Technology have jointly published a research paper entitled Sustainable Generation of Sulfate Radicals and Decontamination of Micropollutants via Sequential Electrochemistry in Engineering. The first author is Zheng Wentian, aPhD student of the DHU institute, and the corresponding authors are Prof. Liu and Prof. You.

The study presents a strategy for targeted induction of sulfate radicals (SO4·–) by a flow-through bipolar electrochemical system, which utilizes the prevalent sulfate anion (SO42-) in water to achieve fast decontamination of typical water micropollutants. This advanced wastewater treatment approach does not requireadditional chemicals; the production of SO4·– and subsequent re-generation of SO42- can be realized with only limited electrical energy consumption, enabling the recycling of SO42- in the reaction system and efficient micropollutant degradation. The study investigatesflow-through configuration, SO4•– generation and regulation, and pollutant removal efficiency. It provides an efficient integrated system based on catalytic oxidation, electrochemistry and microfiltration technologies for the treatment of organic pollutants.

As a comprehensive journal of engineering science and technology, Engineeringwas launched in 2015 by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), one of the most prestigious academic institutions in engineering S&T in China. The journal is jointly published by CAE, Higher Education Press, a leading Chinese publishing house, and Elsevier. It was included in the China Science and Technology Journal Excellence Action Plan in 2019.
