On December 13, President Yu Jianyong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, met with Michael Stanley-Jones, Joint Secretary-General of the United Nations Alliance on Sustainable Fashion and Program Management Manager of the Ecosystem Division of the United Nations Environment Programme at Yan'an Campus. Heads of relevant departments such as the International Cooperation Office, the President's Office, and the Fashion and Innovation Industry Research Center attended the meeting.
Yu Jianyong extended a warm welcome to the visit of Secretary General Jones and his companions. He introduced the history, discipline layout and development of the school, as well as the scientific research, development and innovation carried out with relevant departments of Shanghai municipal government in jointly building a city of fashion and design, and achievements made in creative design guidance and public service platform construction. He also highlighted the recent scientific research, talent training, social services, and international cooperation on the entire industrial chain, including fibers, fabrics, production, design, and consumption in the field of sustainable fashion. Yu Jianyong stated that Donghua University is willing to cooperate closely with UN agencies in various aspects, associating with relevant enterprises and social organizations to better contribute to the sustainable development goals and make joint efforts to build a green planet.
Mr. Jones praised the achievements and pioneering work of Donghua University in the field of textiles and fashion. He pointed out that 10 UN agencies including the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Bank, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, and the International Trade Center had established an inter-departmental coordinating body, United Nations Alliance on Sustainable Fashion in March, 2019. This initiative aims to accelerate the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through innovation in textile industry and close cooperation with fashion industry. Mr. Jones said that in the future, he will strengthen close cooperation with Donghua University to promote the work of the United Nations Environment Programme and the United Nations Alliance on Sustainable Fashion.
