From Aug. 11 to Aug. 12, the event themed “Shanghai Season: The Development and Innovation of Shanghai-style Qipao” was held at UK’s renowned Edinburgh Art Festival, comprising a costume exhibition and a fashion show. At the costume exhibition characterized by the history of Shanghai-style Qipao, 33 Qipao dresses from first half of the 20th century collected by Shanghai Museum of Textile and Costume were put on display. The fashion show witnessed the Shanghai-style business Qipao created by design experts from Donghua University (DHU) as well as design works from five enterprises engaged in advanced Shanghai-style Qipao customization.“Donghua Collection” and “Donghua Design” made their debuts in Edinburgh, which aroused wide concern from the public and media such as Xinhua News Agency.
Hosted by Shanghai Promotion Center for City of Fashion (SPCF) and organized by Donghua University and Shanghai Fashion Accessories Society, the event of “Shanghai Season: The Development and Innovation of Shanghai-style Qipao” is the first trial for Edinburgh Art Festival to hold the performance themed Shanghai fashion, for the National Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh City Chambers to have Shanghai-style Qipao show and static exhibition, and also for Shanghai Qipao to debut at an international art festival in the form of a blend of history and innovation, realizing the first cooperation between Shanghai Museum of Textile and Costume and a famous foreign museum.

The serial event themed “Shanghai Season: The Development and Innovation of Shanghai-style Qipao” opened at the National Museum of Scotland in the evening of August 11. Li Yongzhi, Vice President of Donghua University, and Steve • KaTangni, Vice Mayor of Edinburgh, delivered a speech respectively. Bian Xiangyang, Director of SPCF and Curator of Shanghai Museum of Textile and Costume, introduced the background and implementation of the event. Li Yongzhi stated that the event focused on the development and innovation of Shanghai-style Qipao to present different fashion trends and artistic characteristics through different eras as well as the evolution of costume aesthetics and fashion values in Shanghai.

This event creates a platform for presenting the integrative development of Shanghai-style Qipao’s history, culture, innovation, design and industry, embodying DHU’s professional capabilities in art design and long-term accumulation of Shanghai culture and fashion innovation, which functions as an active response to the construction of Shanghai international cultural metropolis, international science and technology center and international fashion metropolis, as well as the state strategies of “One Belt, One Road” and “Culture Going Out.”
In the song of a Scotland singer wearing Chinese-style dress, 20 Scotland models and 3 celebrities of Shanghai-style Qipao stood on the runway, wearing business Qipao featuring “Gold, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth” designed by teachers from DHU, Xu Xubing, Shen Chen, Luo Jingjie, Cai Lingxiao and Ni Jun, as well as fashionable works from enterprises engaged in advanced Shanghai-style Qipao customization, which triggered heated responses from the audience. Apart from the 30 Qipao dresses from 1st half of the 20th century on display, a feature film of Shanghai-style Qipao culture made by Shanghai Museum of Textile and Costume attracted many visitors to inquire about the purchasing methods of the works.

On August 12, the serial event was continued at the Edinburgh City Chambers. “Modern Times” classic collection exhibition of Shanghai-style Qipao from the 1st half of 20th century fully, with 33 Shanghai-style Qipao dresses, embodied the Qipao evolution history in Shanghai as the “Oriental Paris” and the vein of Shanghai culture. Li Yongzhi and the Duty Officer of Edinburgh City Chambers were present.
