On April 7, iF Design Award, the global authoritative industrial design award, released the winners of iF STUDENT DESIGN AWARD 2016. The work “I Calligraphy” designed by Liu Yiting from the Department of Design of the College of Mechanical Engineering stood out from more than 11,000 entries.
The design of “I Calligraphy” aims to combine the modern information and sensing technology with the traditional Chinese calligraphy culture, specifically, to realize the writing function through the coordination between “electronic brush” and tablet PC/smart phone. The product is oriented at teenagers, calligraphy aficionados and foreign Chinese learners, etc. Based on the hardware support, various services such as calligraphy teaching, evaluation, games and competitions have been provided via Apps, thus enabling the users to gain more comprehensive experience of human-machine interaction apart from the writing. Not only can the product cultivate the interest and enthusiasm of target users in Chinese calligraphy, but it can facilitate the promotion of traditional Chinese culture, due to which “I Calligraphy” won great acclaim from experts at home and abroad.
It is said that iF Design Award enjoys equal popularity with Red Dot Award and is titled “Oscar” of the industrial design. Every year iF attracts tens of thousands of entries, only 100 of which are able to win the award. Teachers and students from the College of Mechanical Engineering have won the Red Dot Concept Award for two consecutive years prior to the iF STUDENT DESIGN AWARD 2016. In recent years, the College of Mechanical Engineering has thoroughly implemented the university’s discipline development strategy of “One Body, Two Wings” in accordance with the guideline of “Cultivation of Outstanding Engineers.” This award is one of the major achievements of the college’s construction of industrial design experimental class as well as educational reform.
