Full-Time General Chinese Courses (Program A)

In-Person Study in the Classroom


I. Program Features

  • Study at the center of Shanghai: Study at West Yan’An Road Campus, Donghua University, enjoying decent public transportation and well-equipped facilities. 

  • Focus on language applications: We adopt the self-compiled textbook 'Chinese in Real Life', which is more suitable for international students’ life in China. We also consider the application of Chinese language in daily life and the preparation for HSK tests.

  • Integration of language learning and cultural understanding: We offer the introduction to Chinese culture as well as cultural lectures and practical activities to deepen students' understanding of Mandarin Chinese.

  • Rich online learning materials: We offer various Chinese learning materials, including keywords, language points, recorded videos, dialogue videos, audios, course summaries, and etc. All Learning materials, as well as the assignments, will be uploaded to the learning management platform; and students both in online and offline courses can review the courses at any time.   

  • Various Course Levels: We can provide different course levels to meet different Chinese proficiencies from beginners to HSK6 learners.

  • Assistant Support: We assign Chinese teachers or DHU Chinese students to each class as assistants to provide additional support for international students.

  • Quality Accreditation: We are the only language program in China accredited by EAQUALS, which guarantees consistency and quality in our teaching methods.


II. Program Details :

  • Course Schedule:

    • 2022 Fall Semester: September 5th, 2022 - January 6th, 2023 (18 weeks)

    • 2023 Spring Semester (tentative): March 6th, 2023 - July 7th, 2023 (18 weeks)

  • Application deadline

    • 2022 Fall Semester: July 6th, 2022

    • 2023 Spring Semester (tentative): December 28th, 2022

  • Class time: 9:00 AM - 12:15 PM Beijing Time, Monday to Friday (Except for holidays and special circumstances);

  • Small classLess than 25 people per class;

  • Levels: Beginner, Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced with a maximum of 8 levels. Students have to take a placement test to evaluate their Chinese proficiency, and they will be divided into different levels based on the test result.

III. Fees

  • Application fee: CNY 400

  • Tuition: CNY 10,200 per semester

  • Preferential policy:

    • The applicant who never studied at DHU before and is recommended by an international student who has studied or is studying at DHU will enjoy application fee waivers. The referee's passport name should be provided accurately during the application.

    • If you continue to study at Donghua University for more than one semester, you will enjoy following benefits:

      • Waive of the application fee since the second semester of study

      • A tuition discount is listed in the following table

IV. Application

  • Age Eligibility: 16-60 years old

  • Application procedure

    1. Apply online via https://admissions.dhu.edu.cn/ with your personal information and the chosen language program;

    2. Upload the required document; ensure that you enclose all the scanned documents clear and visible and file size should below 100KB.

      • Scanned passport information page

      • One bareheaded electronic ID photo

      • Valid Chinese visa (offline study applicants only)

    3. University will email you and review your application once we receive your admission fee. We may ask you to submit additional information, if necessary.

    4. Wait for your admission result. Whilst we aim to give you a decision via email within 10 working days, in some instances due to the volume of applications received, it may cause some delay.


V. Others

  • Textbooks: Self-compiled textbooks Chinese in Real Life with online supplementary learning materials.

  • Visa: Documents for the student visa and Residence Permit (Study) application will be provided to the student who is currently living in China.

  • Accommodation: Students can apply for campus accommodation based on their capacity. If the reservation is confirmed, please check in during the designated time as required.

  • Insurance: Following the regulations from the Ministry of Education of China, and to better protect international students studying in China, international students are required to purchase insurance, of which the validity should be enough to cover one's study duration. Language students who have already had any other international insurance that undertakes insurance liabilities on a medical and accidental injury during their stay in China MUST provide copies of the insurance policy or card at DHU registration. If it is not purchased yet, one can choose to buy the 'Comprehensive Insurance & Protection Scheme for Foreigners Staying in China' offered by Ping An Annuity Insurance Company, Ltd., which is CNY 400 per semester at DHU registration.   • Refund

    • Application feeNon-refundable;

    • Tuition: Full refund: study terminated before instruction starts.

      50% refund: study terminated in the 1st week of study.

      NO refund will be accepted from the 2nd week of study.

  • Class arrangement

    • Students have to take a placement test to evaluate their Chinese proficiency, and they will be divided into different levels based on the test result.

    • In the 1st week, students are allowed to change the course level within a specific timeframe.

  • Epidemic prevention and control

    • In-person study students will be allowed to enter the campus only if they follow epidemic control policies and regulations of the Shanghai Municipal Government and Donghua University.

    • Any time during the semester, the school may have to adjust In-person courses to online temporarily for epidemic prevention and control purposes according to the development of the domestic epidemic situation in Shanghai. It is to ensure the safety and health of teachers and students.  Students are requested to actively cooperate in such adjustments the paid tuition will not be refunded.  The course contents and teaching paces are the same as in-person classes.
