On July 4, a meeting was held to announce the establishment of the College of Biological Science and Medical Engineering and the renaming of the College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology into the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

As a national "Double First-class" university, Donghua University has seized the opportunity to establish the College of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, which is not only a response to China's and Shanghai's major strategies but also an essential step to strengthen the prospective layout of disciplines, build new discipline growth engines and accelerate school construction as a "Double First-class" university.

In 2001, the former College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering set up the Bio-engineering Department, which started the official enrollment that year. In October 2004, the university established the Institute of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, which adopted the management and operation mechanism in line with international standards. In October 2007, the College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology was established from the merger of the former College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the Institute of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology. After more than 20 years of development, the Department of Biological Engineering has made outstanding achievements in faculty development, personnel training and scientific research. Its biological engineering program has been selected as one of the national first-class undergraduate programs in 2021.

The newly-established College of Biological Science and Medical Engineering will focus on such disciplinary directions and research fields as biomaterials and medical devices, diagnosis and treatment of major diseases and epidemic protection, artificial intelligence and intelligent medicine, and synthetic biology, carry out undergraduate and graduate education and related scientific research, cultivate innovative talents, and actively response to national strategies.
