Development and History
Donghua University has a long-standing reputation in the research and education of science and technology since its foundation in 1951. School of Environmental Science and Engineering, one of major schools of Donghua University, was formally established in 1999. Its predecessor, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, came into being in 1973, based on the combination of the specialty of environmental engineering and the teaching and research section of chemical engineering principle in Department of Textile Chemical Engineering, and the specialty of heating ventilation and air conditioning in Department of Mechanical Engineering.
In the recent ten years, a lot of distinguished outcomes have been achieved by taking education reform measures, strengthening experimental courses and broadening the students’ scope of knowledge. School of Environmental Science and Engineering enrolled around 200 undergraduate students in 2004. In order to meet the needs of society and students’ interests, undergraduates will choose the specialty after one year’s study according to their wishes and achievements.
Structure
Currently, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering consists of three departments, environmental engineering, environmental science, and constructional environment & equipment engineering. There are nearly 60 staff members in the school, including 6 supervisors for Ph. D. Programs, 9 professors, and 13 associate professors. school of Environmental Science & Engineering exercises the authority over awarding Doctoral Degrees, Master’s Degrees, Master of Engineering and Bachelor’s Degrees in three specialties, i.e., Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, and Constructional Environment & Equipment Engineering.
School of Environmental Science and Engineering possesses the experimental centre for environmental science and engineering and computer centre. All laboratories in the school are equipped with up-to-date instruments, which provide favorable conditions for teaching and research.
Research
School of Environmental Science and Engineering holds the China’s top rank certificate of environmental engineering special project design and the first rate certificate of environmental impact evaluating. Scientific research in school of Environmental Science and Engineering focuses mainly on the management of wastewater and dust removal in industries of printing and dyeing of fabric, medical industry, thermal power plant, chemical industry, metallurgical industry and food industry. Some outcomes, for example, anaerobic treatment of organic maters, environmental monitoring technology, utilization of natural resources, waste cycling and reuse technology, and high efficiency cyclone advanced in China. All people of the school are striving with great efforts for constructing the school into an education and research center of environmental science and engineering of first class at home and abroad.
