Development and History

As one of the first schools offering graduate degrees in Donghua University, School of Textiles has degree programs for Bachelor of Engineering, Master of Science and Engineering, and Doctor of Science. It has one primary national key discipline of Textile Science and Engineering, two secondary national key disciplines namely Textile Engineering and Textile Materials Science and Product Design, one primary doctoral program and one post doctoral training center.

The school currently has 103 faculty and staff members including 28 professors, 45 associate professors and senior engineers, and 26 professors qualified to supervise Ph.D. students. In 2004 and 2009, Textile Science and Engineering program were ranked number one nationwide in the National Educational Program Accreditation.

School of Textiles has also been one of the leading institutes worldwide in textile science and engineering due to its variety of undergraduate and graduate programs, distinguished research activities, and excellent teaching team. The school has collaboration and student exchange programs with most of the leading colleges, universities and research institutions in textiles around the world. The school has organized or co-organized and hosted the Textile Institute 83th World Conference, The Fiber Society 2009 Spring Conference, International Research Forum in Textile Science and Engineering for Doctoral Candidates, National Summer School for Doctoral Students in Textile Science and Engineering.

There are four departments, textile engineering, knitting engineering and knitted garment, textile materials and textile design and non-woven materials and engineering, a test center and national key laboratory issued by China Education Committee (state key textile clothing technology laboratory). The major of textile engineering is one of the national key subjects. Three majors, textile engineering, knitting engineering and textile materials and textile design, offer bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. It is authorized to run postdoctoral research program open to doctors at home and abroad.

There are 8 labs in the school, such as textile, knitting, garment, textile materials, chemical and computer labs. 3 computer labs, altogether 120 computers, are used for teaching and research. The computer lab is authorized by Microsoft as the training center and also serves as network school for CISCO. There are 5 labs co-established with international famous companies, a IWS/DHU wool testing lab, spinning lab with Schlafhorst, twisting lab with Saurer, weaving lab with Sulzer-Ruti and air-jet weaving machine with Nissan.

The School received various research funds and projects, like National Science Fund, national innovative projects and projects from different enterprises. The school received many awards issued by the state and provinces. Extensive exchange in research and teaching has also been built between the school and universities or institutes at home and aboard. The major of fiber processing is one of the key subjects listed in the National “211 Project” and textile science and engineering is one of the key subjects at municipal level, which offer a basis for training advanced textile engineers and conducting research at a higher level.

The School has a highly experienced faulty, which is composed of esteemed professors and research fellows. There are 127 staff members in the school, including 25 professors (including 22 advisors for doctoral candidates and 1 member of Chinese Academy Engineering), 2 guest professors and 40 associate professors, associate research fellows and senior engineers.
