TRIBO Shanghai 2026 International Symposium Advances Global Dialogue on Tribology, Materials, and Advanced Manufacturing

From April 24 to 26, TRIBO Shanghai 2026 – The International Symposium on Advanced Tribology and Materials was held at Donghua University. Centered on the theme “Interdisciplinary Integration, Frontier Technology Breakthroughs, and Building a Global Tribology Community,” the symposium brought together leading researchers, industry experts, and young scholars to explore emerging developments at the intersection of tribology, materials science, and advanced manufacturing.

The event was jointly organized by Donghua University and the Tribology Committee of the Shanghai Society of Mechanical Engineering, and hosted by the School of Mechanical Engineering and the Engineering Research Center of Textile Equipment under China’s Ministry of Education. Nearly 100 participants from 10 countries and regions attended, including academic researchers, industrial scientists, graduate students, and representatives from instrumentation, lubricant, and additive companies. Positioned as an interdisciplinary platform for academic exchange in advanced manufacturing, the symposium focused on both the fundamental science and practical applications of advanced lubrication technologies, tribology, high-performance textiles, and advanced materials. Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening the integration of Donghua University's distinctive strengths in textile science and materials engineering with industrial tribology research, creating new opportunities for scientific discovery and technological innovation.

In his welcome address, Academician Sun Yize noted that the global manufacturing sector is increasingly moving toward higher-quality, intelligent, and sustainable development. He emphasized that advancements in areas such as new energy vehicles, aerospace engines, wind power systems, and textile machinery depend on deeper collaboration across tribology, materials science, and textile engineering. Drawing on Donghua University's long-standing expertise in textile materials and advanced manufacturing, he highlighted the university’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary research and developing distinctive research directions in industrial tribology.

The symposium featured six keynote lectures and eighteen invited presentations, alongside a Young Tribologists Forum and a poster competition. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, including wind energy systems, electric vehicles and automotive components, internal combustion engines, refrigeration compressors, bearings and mechanical components, lubricants and additives, surface coatings and tribological modification, composite materials and textile equipment, sealing technologies and equipment dynamics, aerospace and nuclear applications, biomedical tribology, as well as numerical simulation and algorithm development. Participants shared the latest scientific advances and emerging trends across these rapidly evolving research areas.

Keynote Report

By connecting frontier academic research with industrial challenges, TRIBO Shanghai 2026 provided an important platform for collaboration among universities, research institutes, and industry partners. The symposium is expected to support innovation in tribology and textile-related interdisciplinary fields, strengthen talent development and international academic cooperation, and accelerate the application of advanced tribological technologies in strategic industries including high-end equipment manufacturing, renewable energy, automotive engineering, and advanced materials.
