Development and History

College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CCEB) was founded by the mergence of College of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering and Institute of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology in October 2007. College of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering grew out of the Department of Textile Chemistry Engineering which was set up in 1951. Textile Chemistry and Dyeing & Finishing Engineering, renowned at home and abroad, is the national key discipline with an important influence. Institute of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology was established in October 2004 with the adoption of international oriented management and operational mechanism. Contact

After 60 years of development, CCEB has four departments: Textile Chemistry and Dyeing & Finishing Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Bioengineering and Chemistry. National Engineering Research Center for Dyeing & Finishing of Textile, Key Lab of Eco-Textile of the Ministry of Education and Key Lab of Textile Science & Technology (Branch of Dyeing & Finishing) of the Ministry of Education are the three important research bases of CCEB.

Currently, the college consists of 122 faculty and staff members, including 27 full professors and 46 associate professors. Among them, there are one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, one CheungKong Professor, one professor of special appointment at Shanghai Institutions of Higher Learning (Eastern Scholar) and twenty two Ph.D. supervisors. 75% of our faculty members have obtained doctoral degrees and more than half of them have study or work experience abroad.

With a solid strength in personnel training, CCEB provides three undergraduate programs in Textile Chemical Engineering (Sino-Germany cooperative education), Applied Chemistry and Bioengineering; three master programs in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Technology and Biomedical Engineering under the primary discipline; two master programs in Textile Chemistry and Dyeing & Finishing Engineering, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) under the secondary discipline; three master of engineering programs in Textile Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering); one doctoral program in Chemistry under the primary discipline and one doctoral program in Textile Chemistry and Dyeing & Finishing Engineering under the secondary discipline.

With a strong ability of research and development, CCEB annually undertakes many kinds of research and development projects. Since 2006, CCEB has won two second-class prizes of National Prizes for Progress in Science and Technology, three Provincial and Ministerial Technical Invention Awards (one first-class prize, one second-class prize, and one third-class prize); eleven Provincial and Ministerial Scientific and Technological Progress Awards (one first class prize, five second class prize, and five third class prize ). Textile Chemistry and Dyeing & Finishing Engineering is the State Key Discipline, also the Shanghai Municipal Key Discipline, the Key Construction Discipline under the "211 Project" supported by the Ministry of Education. The chemistry discipline is included in the worldwide top 1% ESI ranking lists of disciplinary areas.

CCEB positively carries out the industrial-academic research cooperation. The Donghua University-Zhejiang Transfar Group R&D Center for Green Textile Auxiliaries was set up in 2008. A number of training bases for undergraduate and graduate students have been established in enterprises in Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces. A number of enterprises such as Shanghai Anoky Textile Chemicals Co. Ltd. have set up scholarship programs for students of CCEB.

CCEB has been emphasizing international communication and cooperation. CCEB has established extensive scientific research cooperation and academic communication with foreign universities and institutions in Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Singapore, Sweden, Germany, Portugal, etc. In 2003, CCEB started to collaborate in Textile Chemical Engineering with Reutlingen University of Applied Sciences, Germany. CCEB carries out student exchange program with Hochschule Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Germany and University of California-Davis, USA. The 12th International Wool Research Conference was successfully held by CCEB in 2010.
